INTRODUCING A NEW WAY

FAQ

The KIWI Miner is a simple at home device that provides a low-power network coverage called LongFi. Because each device helps expand the Helium (HNT) network, it is rewarded by allowing it to mine the HNT token. In simpler terms, the host (you) is awarded with HNT tokens by hosting the device.

You will be paid on the 15th of each month. Since KIWI doesn’t charge its hosts for the initial upfront cost for the KIWI Miner, the payments will start after the initial cost of the device has been recovered - approximately 1 - 2 months.

Your KIWI Miner will consume less energy than an LED bulb (5W) at peak.

Here at KIWI we don’t charge you anything to host our device. We like to think of our hosts as family so we trust that you will take care of your hosted device.

The Helium network has many use cases. Some of these use cases are the connection of pet trackers to the network so that owners receive a much more accurate and real time data on their pet’s location. Another use case is for scooter companies, like Bird or Lime, to jump on the Helium network and better track the location of their in-city scooters.

No, absolutely not. The KIWI Miner does not have the appropriate hardware to be able to access your personal network. While the device needs internet connection, it is only used to provide connectivity to the KIWI Miner to transmit data received for blockchain peer-to-peer and LongFi networking. The miner cannot be used to access any information contained within your personal network and cannot be used by outside devices to access your home or business network. Helium-enabled LoRaWAN (see below) devices are hardware-secured to protect the traffic from the utilized spectrum. This means the security is built-in since devices using the network have AES private key encryption at the chip level.

LoRaWAN is a low-power, wide area networking protocol built on top of the LoRa radio modulation technique. It wirelessly connects devices to the internet and manages communication between end-node devices and network gateways. Usage of LoRaWAN in industrial spaces and smart cities is growing because it is an affordable long-range, bi-directional communication protocol with very low power consumption — Our KIWI Miners can run for ten years on a small battery because we use the unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) radio bands for network deployments.

A challenge requires a small group of miners to prove that they are in the location that they say they are. If they truly are there and online, and within radio distance of each other, then they can hear the "call" and respond as a witness to validate their position.

The first troubleshooting step is to always restart the device by unplugging the power supply and plugging it back in. Wait for the status light to turn from red to green. If this does not fix your issue, you can then try repairing the device using the Helium app available on both iPhone and Android. Connect it to the Helium app and run the diagnostic check on it. No. The KIWI Miner creates a Long-Fi radio signal and routes packets from low-power devices in your area that use LoRaWAN and have been deployed to the Helium Network. Typically, these are devices such as pet or other GPS trackers, environmental sensors, weather meters, etc., that only need to transmit and share small bits of information. KIWI uses your existing internet (via WiFi or Ethernet) to deliver these data packets sent by the devices. It does not replace internet or cellular service for regular devices like computers and smartphones.

For the network to work flawlessly, the KIWI Miners have to be at least 300 meters apart. Otherwise the devices will not be eligible to witness each other as part of the Proof of Coverage challenges and will compete with each other. Proof of Coverage rewards better with a wider coverage. You will earn more HNT if you do this!
